Fishing in Venezuela

Lure busting, Peacock Bass aerobatically rocket forth upward hidden in the abyss of the tannin-stained waters of Venezuela's jungles. Simply known, as "Pavon" by name, this battle spirited freshwater South American specie is reputed to wildly jump, make lightning-fast runs and courageously snap rods

LuresAnglers have been known to embellish the tales of their fishing experiences, telling stories about the ones that got away, leading their listeners to question the accuracy of their stories. But every angler that has gone after the fabled Peacock Bass has returned with their own tales of this great game fish, the ones that got away and the ones they landed. And as they spin their stories, their eyes glaze over and their faces assume a far away look.

Peacocks, indigenous to the Orinoco-Amazon River system in Brazil and Venezuela are not timid, nor are they for the faint of heart. Although they respond very well to flys, they prefer topwater lures and the larger the better. Something about the size of an axe handle will do nicely. As you work your lure back to the boat be prepared, because when they strike, they attack with the speed and ferocity of a water born pit bull. Many a surprised angler has retrieved his lure only to find half of it missing, the other half swimming away in the belly of a Peacock.

Peacock BassOnce you have a Peacock on your line, you better have a death grip on your rod because these behemoths have been known to jerk the pole right out of the hands of an unprepared angler, leaving them holding nothing but air. Set the hook hard and watch the show as your catch starts its run. Diving deep and then shooting skyward like an sky rocket out of control, twisting and shaking its massive body in an attempt to throw your lure.

Peacock Bass or Peacock Pavon, as they are known in Venezuela are fighters, or more accurately they are like bar room brawlers. With a bag of tricks, enormous strength and great leaping ability, these creatures will attempt to out-muscle you and show you who is really the boss of these still, calm waters.

The Peacock Pavon is the big brother of the cichlid family. The other members, though smaller in size are just as ferocious as their larger relative.

Pictured in the column to the right are the other members of the family; the Butterfly Pavon, the Speckled Pavon and the Royal Pavon.

All Pavons are spectacular leapers and worthy opponents and promising an experience to remember for all anglers, whether you are a novice or world class sport fisherman.
